Cornerstone's website was designed, authored and is currently maintained
by Kathy Matthes.
Kathy Matthes received her Masters of Science in Education (MSED) in Instructional Technology
(the science of designing instruction) from the University of Southern California's Rossier School
of Education. Her research focused on instructional design for the Internet, distance education and interactive
multimedia, which included coursework in film production and interactive multimedia production at
the USC School of Cinema. She expects to complete a Masters of Professional Writing (MPW) degree at USC in
spring 2006. She received her B.A. in Humanities from California State University, Northridge, which included
a Humanities Study Abroad Program in Europe.
An avid horsewoman, she has taught riding (Dressage, Hunt Seat and Eventing) to adults and children
for over 14 years as well as UCLA Extension Horsemanship classes. She is one of only a handful of
instructors in California that use an interactive, kinesthetic approach to teaching riding that
incorporates physics, body mechanics, kinesiology, educational psychology, and sports psychology.
Always interested in further education in the horse industry, she has developed educational programs,
edited and desktop published newsletters, compiled training manuals and guidebooks, established and
directed an educational riding club, offered interactive riding study groups, and brought the prestigious
British Horse Society's training programs to the West Coast. In addition, she has designed, authored and
maintained equestrian websites for Traditional Equitation School, Dominion Saddlery and Cornerstone, Ltd.
as well as published articles in top equestrian magazines.
During her 16 years at USC as a technology/computer consultant, she trained many faculty, staff and
students how to use computers and the Internet as well as helped faculty to incorporate new technologies
into the curriculum and design class web sites. She also edited and desktop published newsletters, wrote
successful grant proposals, managed an instructional computer lab, wrote training guides, offered Internet
literacy classes and designed the School of International Relations' website.
Other educational projects include project management for the Blackboard course production team at the
College of Extended Learning, California State University, Northridge, and Blackboard courseware support management
at USC's Center for Scholarly Technology during its transition to Blackboard 5.0--both projects involved
teaching faculty, staff and students how to design and support online courses. As the first Paloheimo Intern
at the Pasadena Museum of History, she inventoried, digitally photographed and catalogued all of the historic
artifacts in the 1906 Fenyes Mansion and produced information sheets on various mansion artifacts. As an educational
writer for AIMS Multimedia's Digital Curriculum program (which offers on-demand educational videos to K-12 schools
throughout the U.S.), she wrote educational materials for the videos.
Ms. Matthes lives and works in the Los Angeles area as an instructional technologist, web designer,
educational consultant and college teacher. She teaches undergraduate English and graduate Education courses online.
She is available for educational web design, instructional design, online course development and online
teaching. You can contact
